Corporate Overview

  • Beef and Lamb Procurement
  • Beef and Lamb Abattoir
  • Transportation

A family owned business with facilities in Langport, Somerset. The company was historically one of the largest exporters of cattle meat into Europe, trading under JH Cobden Ltd. Following the partnership formed between the Cobden family and the Heffer family in 1996, who own Romford Wholesale Meats Ltd also on the Langport site.

The company has expanded out of all recognition, due to the commitment to customers which has increased the volume of cattle purchased from British farmers.

To manage the supply of livestock, SCFF launched the Southern Counties Livestock Office, in 1997, which is the purchasing arm for both Southern Counties Fresh Foods Ltd and RWM Dorset Ltd.

The Livestock Office supplies regular feed back to farmers and has a commitment to implementing the use of communications technology wherever possible. Farmers can receive carcase information by email on the day of slaughter.

The company has a Laboratory on site, which continually monitors the quality & safety of all products processed on site.

TRANSPORT

  • National collection of all livestock
  • All vechicles are ABM approved

Southern Counties have invested in their own fleet of approved transport. They have a total of six lorries in the fleet - four artic units, including one sheep transporter, and two small 7.5 tonne lorry, which can carry up to six cattle.

The larger vehicles will carry up to 40 cattle, which has been ideal for our larger suppliers, but is now in full use for all Livestock Office members, as movement restrictions allow multi pick-ups.

DID YOU KNOW?

All hauliers transporting farm assured cattle or sheep MUST be hauled by ABM APPROVED hauliers. SCFF have already sent application forms to all hauliers. It is important that you check that your haulier is approved so that you continue to receive the full value of your stock. Stock which has not been transported by ABM approved transport will lose its farm assurance status. Farmers hauling their own stock can achieve ABM Approved status for transport at the time of their annual FABBL inspection.
